Tips for fitting fire bricks :

  • Soak the bricks for 30 minutes in water before sealing
  • Use refractory mortar or lime mortar
  • Let your construction dry for at least 10 days
  • Initial firing : raise the temperature slowly and gradually on low heat for 4-5 hours to remove humidity

The Terres Cuites de Raujolles, France’s number 1 manufacturer of food refractory bricks, present their oven brick, ideal for building bread ovens, pizza ovens, barbecues and fireplaces.

Oven fire bricks are used for building and restoring bread ovens, pizza ovens and barbecues, as well as fireplaces and tiled stoves. Fire bricks both retain and give out heat. They warm up slowly, but also cool down slowly, due to their thermal inertia. They insulate, retain and maintain high temperatures, as for example in a bread oven hearth.

Estimate the number of bricks needed to build your bread oven

Calculation for the oven floor:

Calculation for the oven floor:
Sole calculation

Circle diameter (in m)

Number of oven floor tiles

Ex: Diameter 0.90 m = 10.8 bricks 30 x 30 x 5 cm

Calculation for the oven dome:

Calculation for the oven dome:
Dome calculation

Oven floor diameter (in m)

Number of oven fire bricks

Ex: Diameter 0.90 m = 99 bricks 5 x 10.5 x 22 cm

Calculation of the number of oven floor tiles

We take into consideration :

  • The inside diameter of the oven

  • The size of the oven floor tiles (30 x 30 x 5 cm)

  • The lack of joint between the bricks

Calculation of the number of bricks for the dome

We take into consideration :

  • The inside diameter of the oven

  • The size of the oven fire bricks (5 x 10,5 x 22 cm)

  • The 1 cm wide joint between each brick

  • This result corresponds to a 10,5 cm dome thickness (bricks installation in width)

For a 22 cm dome thickness, multiply this result by 2 (bricks installation in length - see the video)
