Advice for ceramics tiles : laying, cutting, glueing and grouting

Advice for laying Ceramics

To obtain a smooth surface

• Do a simulation of the laying starting from the top (without forgetting the width of the joints). This will tell you how many tiles will need cutting at the bottom.

Cut these tiles using a diamond disk.

Fixing the tiles

Using a V-notched spatula start by spreading the adhesive where the topmost row of tiles will be, never more than half a square meter at a time.

Place then push firmly to fix the first tile against the wall.

Tap on it gently with a mallet to secure it.

Do not forget to use tile-spacers (3 to 4 mms) to be placed between each tile to obtain joints of equal size.

Once the first row is fixed check the flatness of the surface you have tiled then spread the adhesive for the next row.

Continue like this to the end.
Before the adhesive is completely dry (12 hours) remove the tile-spacers.

Grouting

Work fast to avoid the joints drying

Remove the tile-spacers then leave to dry all night

The next morning spread the grout over the tiled surface pushing it into the gaps with a rubber grout float.

Clean the surface of the tiles as you go with a damp sponge then with a dry cloth to remove traces of the grout
